Even with the accolades he has gained while leading Prospect's high-octane offense, Miles Osei battles the label of a non-traditional quarterback.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 194-pound Osei is a hybrid signal-caller who can break down a defense with his speed or utilize his strong arm.

"I feel I have something to prove," Osei said. "A lot of people talk about my height. I can do all the things a bigger quarterback can do, if not more."

Osei has garnered attention from several mid-major schools. His recent play has attracted more interest, with Illinois joining the mix.

Osei gets another opportunity to add to his reputation Friday when Prospect (2-0) plays Conant (1-1) in Hoffman Estates.

After totaling 2,328 passing yards and 1,237 rushing yards in 2008, Osei opened the season by passing for 274 yards and four touchdowns. He added 137 rushing yards and a touchdown to lead Prospect to a 41-27 triumph over York. In Prospect's 48-14 victory against Schaumburg last weekend, Osei tallied 233 yards passing and 136 yards on the ground.

"I feel good about how I'm playing and just try and take it week by week," Osei said.

Osei is the perfect fit to run Prospect's no-huddle spread offense. The lefty gunslinger gives opposing coaches headaches with his all-around talent. Prospect coach Brent Pearlman marvels at his quarterback's humility.

"He wows me at some point in every game," Pearlman said. "He impresses me on the field, but impresses me more off the field. And that says a lot. He's a phenomenal kid. A great football player, but a better kid off the field. He's a class act."

Osei said he didn't fully grasp his skills until the middle of his junior season.

"To be considered one of the top players in the state is an honor," Osei said. "My number one goal is to win state."
