That may be the worst division of any conference that is broken into divsions. I can't think of one that is any worse.
CUSA is damn lucky that UTEP is much improved for the last year and a half. If CUSA would have actually gotten what it bargained for (a 1-10, 2-9 UTEP), CUSA west would be as bad as the sunbelt. Why in the world would FSU want to go to CUSA and become a non-factor in the Western US, where they are. IMO they have to keep a western presence. Look what playing in a conf out of it's geographical region did for Idaho, NMSU, and USU.
The incentive would be 5 bowl tie-ins and about 10X the TV money. That said, Fresno would be a horrible fit geographically and would have no interest. Maybe if we can get Fresno St (or Boise St) to move to Texas, it would work well.
Fresno hasn't had a problem getting into bowls. They are a big enough name that they would get an open slot (ie. Poinsettia (sp)) somewhere, even if the WAC bowls went to other teams in a given year. They also are one of the few non-BCS teams that have a good budget already. The few extra dollars they would get would not offset the added expenses.
IMO, Boise and Fresno will stay together. They seem to make each other better.
Look for CUSA to lose a bowl or 2 over the next few years anyway, and the WAC to gain 1.
The Big East will take at least 2 teams from the CUSA east sometime in the near future. I doubt that it will be 2 of the bottom dwellers. I would guess that Memphis would be one that goes to the Big East. JMOHO
La Tech would not only fit in well in CUSA they would probably be a dominant force along with UTEP. That is a team whose team would greatly bennifit from recruiting for CUSA.
I hope La Tech stays in the WAC for the immidiate future although I understand that they need to make a conference change for the long term.

FYI, CUSA just signed 5-year extensions on all five bowl tie-ins, and are working on the Houston Bowl as well.
FYI, those bowl contracts can be voided if the membership of the conference changes. Just ask the MWC. They actually are bummed they lost the Holiday bowl. They never had that bowl, it was a WAC bowl but the membership of the WAC changed.
I can't see the Liberty staying with CUSA if/when Memphis goes to the Big East. Even in the East people realize that CUSA is weaker than it was before the most recent changes. JMOHO
Tell us how you became aware of the fine print in the five SEPARATE and UNRELATED bowl contracts involving CUSA. Where did you find that each would be voided if the league membership changed?
