I'm no expert in this field, and no, you can't trust the government, but a lot of this apparently went on without even government officials knowing it. Call me naive, but I don't believe these whistle blowers are setups for some government conspiracy. I just think the military held these secrets so as not to panic the public, b/c they knew we can do nothing about it, and so far, nothing seems like an immediate threat.

Did you read the details in the article? Russia didn't reveal this. An American sneaked proof out of the country at risk to himself.
