In realignment, basketball DOES NOT MATTER. If we get left out, going basketball only is not an option either. We are not a small liberal arts school that can actually afford basketball only - we have to have football.
The only two options are 1) get into P5, 2) continue to pump football and be the premier G5 football program with the hopes of a play-in for the playoffs or a NY6 bowl.
Bottom line is we can build football AND maintain basketball at the highest level, but we cannot destroy football AND maintain basketball at the highest level. We are not Georgetown. We are not Gonzaga. We don’t fit those models. You HAVE to have football to get basketball.
I really think many of you are still stuck in the mindset of the 80’s and early 90’s when your point of view was valid, but that is not the world of college athletics anymore.
What model DO we fit ? Because we sure aren’t like the schools currently in any P5
We are just like the 4 who just got in, plus Louisville, NC State, MS State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Washington State, Miami, just to name a few. Essentially we are like most state schools that are #2 in their respective state.
Getting the R1 designation is gigantic for our ability to catch that last train out.
more like the #3 in the state. not like the 4 that got in and not really similar to those listed above. No OCS.
utk vandy memphis
