Virginia Tech fans were calling for Fuente's job all last season, and now that we were patient 1 more year, we start the season with a top 10 win. It requires an AD with some guts to stand up to a chorus of 'fire the coach' from boosters to really build a program. Geoff Collins may not have been the guy but you have to at least give him a chance.

If you got a good close up look of the NIU game like I did, it's warranted not harsh. A hapless, winless, depleted NIU squad ran circles around Collins' staff in coaching. Just WTF do you think will happen in two weeks against Clemson if "mighty NIU" had too much coaching power to handle? I still say staff changes happen if he loses this weekend, and that's entirely possible. I've seen Kennesaw favored at one casino. If they finish with another <= 4 win campaign the heat will be turned up to inferno for whoever survives into next year.

It may be harsh, it may be accurate. Yes, NIU was awful last year. Are they awful this year? After 1 game, nobody can say with any certainty. This week they take on a beatable Wyoming squad who struggled to get past Montana State. Then they head to the Big House. After that they have a game against BCS Maine and the MAC schedule. They could finish as high as 11-1 and win the MAC. If that is the case, it is not so terrible.

That being said, lose to Kennesaw State and somebody needs to be fired. Maybe not Geoff Collins, but somebody needs to be held accountable.

So if NIU can go from 0-6 to 11-1, why can't GT get to 6-6?

My issues is I've seen little development with the talent.
2019 the Offensive playcalling looked like throwing spaghetti against the wall, try everything and see what sticks. 2020 was a lot of the same with a lot of new pieces. 2021... and we're still at that level. At some point you have to put together a real offensive gameplan and use it. I've not seen it yet. It makes me believe that it will never change.
Defense has been... well poor all the way through. You put any kind of hurry-up in and the defense just crumbles.

It really makes me think the coordinators are in over their heads here. It would make sense, they were average G5 coordinators at best and now in a P5 league... well they ain't cutting it.

For many teams that dont have the kind of depth that a Clemson or Bama or other top 10 schools have, 2020 doesnt really count since so many games were not played because of covid, or there were lots of substitutions. At SU, it really hurt since the team didnt have much depth in the first place and over the course of the season, SU played more true freshmen than any other team in the nation. It may pay a few dividends this season as the team has crazy young depth at almost every position this season. But next season, 2022 is when I expect to really see dividends payoff. The problem is that a lot of other teams may also serous depth and experience in 2022.
