NuM is in a large metro area (1M vs 200k). NuM has double the undergrad student enrollment of NMSU (22,244 vs 11,675). ABQ is 45 minutes from Santa Fe. NMSU is over 4 hours away. The vast majority of NM legislators have degrees from NuM (all the lawyers do as NMSU does not have a school for lawyers). I could go on and on but you get the picture.

True, Tarleton currently has about half the athletic budget as nmsu. That will change over the next few years, but as of today it's true.

And one would think that such a deficit would create a distinct competitive advantage for nmsu, especially against a lowly transitioning school like Tarleton.

However, what we've seen unfold during our first year of transition is quite the opposite:

"Big 3" Sports, Tarleton vs nmsu Head to Head 2020-2021

Football 1-0 (complete and utter domination)
Basketball 1-1
Baseball 2-2

Total: Tarleton 4, nmsu 3

Or, in other words, Tarleton > nmsu

Just as I've been saying all along.

Illiterate Texan, correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t there some little virus that affected everything this year? Is this year really the year to be comparing teams? I’ve never used covid as an excuse for NMSU and I won’t now. But it affected every team and it wasn’t a normal year. If you want to hang your hat on this year, go for it.

PS, if you want to compare schools keep it to basketball. 99% of Aggie fans care about basketball and little else.

For the most part, many of our non-revenue team rosters are filled with New Mexico HS products. That makes it difficult to compete against programs in more talent rich States. Basketball is one of the few sports where NMSU spend a sufficient amount on recruiting to be competitive.
