There are plenty of schools out west could pull the trigger to turn their club team to varsity.

Didn't read too many of them on this list...but Denver has been sponsoring Division I hockey since the 40s and has 8 national championships (most recently 2017).

Would be nice for the other Colorado schools to get in there though and give them some local competition. Though they are already a member of one of the top 2 conferences in college hockey and get plenty of competition from there.

Air Force also has a D1 team since 1968-69. They have 7 Atlantic Hockey Tournament titles and 7 NCAA Tournament appearances, all since 2006–07.

I knew there'd be at least one other on that list. Thanks!

He's done similar lists on this topic before. One included Minnesota-Duluth just weeks after UMD lost the NCAA title game to Denver. https://csnbbs.com/post-14301462.html#pid14301462

David ignores the high costs of taking those club teams to varsity level. Most of the funding of these teams is raised by the players for rink rental, travel, and equipment. Some schools might hire a coach but coaching the team may not be his primary duties. Making the team varsity also means adding women's sport(s) basically doubling the costs due to Title 9. David, you can't just wave a magic wand to add a sport.

Also, Colorado plays D1 hockey. The University of Colorado doesn't.
