With everyone eligible for another year, it is estimated that only about 1/2 of those in the portal will actually find a new home. That means the other 1/2 in the portal who had a paid education now have nothing. All of these latest transfer "rights" are supposed to provide more rights to the individual student-athlete yet in practice will leave most of these athletes out in the cold with no better landing spot & no paid education. Not sure that's progress. Sitting out is the least of the problem.
I guess that will result in Austin Peay and UTMartin getting better guys and those displaced there will be D2, NAIA or D3 (if they can afford to pay their own tuition). That part is sad.
Bottom line, a large number seeking to transfer will get left out in the cold. The two factors contributing are the new freshmen coming in taking up available scholarships, extended seniors & other classes in this one-time extra year taking up scholarships & those not finding a home out of the portal being squeezed out & losing their free education in the process. And that free education is still the most valuable element of playing scholarship athletics for the vast majority of these student-athletes even though it gets buried due to the pro pursuit that is actually only available for less than 2% of those on scholarship.
I agree.
