Sugar is sugar. Its the same chemical whether it comes from sugar cane, corn or beets.

You are correct that there's no meaningful difference between sucrose and HFCS. Whether or not the glucose and fructose are pre-hydrolyzed before you eat it doesn't matter.

The problem is sugar seems to be added to darn-near everything other than meat and produce these days and the cheapness of HFCS has made that possible.

I checked, the molecular structure is different and that affects neuro receptors. The ratio of glucose and fructose is similar but not identical. Brain chemistry is fairly specific. And that minute difference is an issue with regard to consumption. The caloric values and digestion are similar, but the structure is not he same.
