They lost to Tech 35-33... going 96 yards in their last drive... missing a 2 pt try to tie it AT Tech... who in their next game took UT to OT, losing 63-56.

I know. And TT was 108th in scoring defense last year. The Pirate's Air Raid stunned LSU in the opener, and was then pretty much shut down by a succession of teams that rushed 3 and dropped 8. I watched them struggle against Arkansas, while thinking that it was a shame that they didn't have the run side of the old Hawaii offense to go with their Air Raid. A couple of option plays would have ripped off 10-15 yards a pop, or more, and forced Arkansas out of that scheme. Then the passing game would have worked like a champ. Like any one-dimensional offense, the Air Raid can be stopped. When you can run AND pass effectively, it is a different proposition.

I know RUOwls likes to talk about passing to set up the run. But to do that you need to have a run to set up. Some Air Raid teams don't bother, and that hurts them against good defenses. You can pass to score, but sometimes you have to run to win.

Just for the record, when I was a HS OC, we set our HS individual single game passing yardage record (457 yards which had stood for almost 20 years) and a couple weeks later set the single game individual rushing record (297 yards). So, I know how to call both passing AND run plays.
