MU ATO actually its movement, Abiline Christian, Sam Houston State, Stephen F Austin and Lamar are leaving the Southland Conference and joining the WAC.
The Southland is about to become the land of the misfit toys as the WAC was when the football playing members abandoned it.
That leave the Southland with:
McNeese State
Incarnate Word
Nicholls State
Southeast Louisiana
Houston Baptist
Northwestern State
New Orleans
Who does the Southland go after. West Texas AM, Angelo State and Midwesten State seems logical.
Texas A&M - Commerce is the most logical and convenient. Southland has the 6 they need to continue on as FCS. The financially stable D2 teams you mentioned from the Lone Star will gradually start to matriculate to the Southland, and the Southland will (should) smarten up and start to rid itself of the broke LA schools. Later, as in 5-10 years from now, some of those schools may jump to the FBS WAC.
Not even the most stable school in the new WAC will be ready for IA in 10 years let alone the D2s getting ready to jump. In other words the WAC FBS in 10 years or less is a major pipe dream even if the WAC is grandfathered in. The 2 biggest athletic budgets in the new WAC playing FCS football would be Sam Houston State at 19.2 million and Stephen F Austin at just over 19 million. The only athletic budget lower than that playing IA is Louisiana Monroe at 15.5 million.
