This problem is by no means unique to W&M Athletics. At practically any charity (etc.) you give to, a dollar designated for X means that a different, undesignated dollar can be switched from X to Y.

About the only way around it is to designate very specifically for something X wouldn’t otherwise be doing. The funds raised specifically for men’s basketball’s international trip a few years ago would (maybe) be an example.


This was the biggest complaint I heard from coaches over the years. There was no guarantee that money you helped raise for your program, would actually end up adding to your program's funding, if non-designated funds were needed to fund, say, the Field Hockey program needs.
All those extra designated dollars ended up doing was to make sure you didn't fall even farther behind in your own program. It was definitely frustrating for coaches.
