I have no dog in this fight but I watched that replay 5x. Dude jumps almost straight up and gets flipped by the lineman. It was an incredibly weak call.
I saw the replay as well. Very weak call indeed.
Here is that play in a sequence of photos for those that didn’t see it or wanted to take a look.
Yup, still think it was a pretty bad call. The leaping USA player was not engaged in a block with the up man and then the up man engages with the USA player’s lower body mid air.
Also, I think the rule in general sorta sucks. An up man in a punt formation is not an unprotected/vulnerable player such as a long snapper in a punt or place kicking formation.
