I tend to agree with you but would add one qualifier. They will go along with whatever keeps the conference alive and healthy, as long as it does not damage their interests while they are in the conference. Although most may aspire to another conference, they don't know how long that will take, or even if it will happen within the next decade or two. So they have a commitment to keep the WAC viable.

That's why I think a hybrid would be a "Win/Win". It provides a home and good competition for all members. It also helps protect autobids which might otherwise be jeopardized for conference sponsored sports. There are several other good reasons. For example, it might provide an easier path for a non-football university deciding to add football at a later date.

The SLC has had a hybrid arrangement for years first starting in 1986 after UTA dropped football. During one period of time (1998-2005), the SLC had as many as 5 non-football members competing with membership which sponsored football.
