That might not be popular, and it won’t be easy, but it needs to happen.
As far as fans coming back, I don’t believe they will stay away. What college football needs to worry about is changing demographics in the country making college football less popular in the next decade or two.
They are paid---just not in cash. Its basically a barter system. As far as staying away---crank the prices up enough and they will stay away. Add to that shutting down for almost 2 years and a lot of those loyal fans will find something else to do. When football returns, they wont look at it as "staying away", they will be doing the same thing they have been doing for 24 months.
What a lot of arrogant sports stake holders dont seem to understand is that the consumer can find other things to do. They already have. Despite being the only live sports available, the NBA and MLB TV ratings have been horrible. People have found other stuff to do. I was an Houston Oiler season ticket holder. When they left---I stopped watching the NFL. I just didnt care when I didnt have a dog in the fight. I didnt watch more that a couple of games a year until the Texans franchise started. I was a Texans original season ticket holder as well. I dropped the season tickets after 8 years. Why? Two reasons. One, I just never had the same feelings about the Texans that I had with the Oilers. I like em. Im a fan. But the gut connection just wasnt there for me. The second reason was I missed the things I had been doing when Oilers were gone. You dissappear for 2 years, start paying players, having contract issues, player strikes---its not hard to see how people might just not feel the same about college ball and go back to the things they are doing today.
