That’s probably why the two divisions didn’t work well for the ACC. I don’t think the four pods with 16 teams will work either. For the ACC, it’s a division less model or maybe three pods.

16 team/4 pods could work if the pods rotated divisions.

Year 1: Coastal: Pods A and B; Atlantic: Pods C and D
Year 2: Coastal: Pods A and C; Atlantic: Pods B and D
Year 3: Coastal: Pods A and D; Atlantic: Pods B and C

Logistically speaking, yes you are right. But the four pods won’t fit well because the ACC seems to have three geographical cores as evidenced by 2020 schedule. If you study the 2020 schedule, you will find:

These five northern teams play each other: BC, SU, ND, Pitt, UL
These six VA and NC teams play each other: UVa, VT, UNC, WF, NCSU, Duke
And these four Southern teams play each other: GT, Clemson, FSU, Miami
