A zoom Conversation with President Rudd
Technical problems impacted the live event but I got the recording and just listened to it. Can’t see how to post it but I’ll work on it.
The format was people sending in questions to the moderator who did an excellent job.
I am first struck how knowledgeable he is with every detail of the campus. And the effective way he communicates. Looking back to what he has done since he assumed the leadership role in 2014 is excellence Occurring before our eyes.
Highlights as best I can remember. Add to it If you saw it.
Barring C-19 setbacks we are prepared to bring back sport this fall. No real details. We know the June return to campus for modified activities.
Summer projected enrollment is up 15%
Fall projected enrollment based on orientation activity is up 15% over last years record setting freshmen class. Transfer projected enrollment is up but no number.
Patterson realignment project continues. Sidewalks and parking lots are in progress.
Wellness building is on schedule.
Music building is breaking ground this summer.
Campus school renovations are on target and they are adding Kindergarten this fall.
Middle school plans advancing for a permanent location.
Lambuth campus high school being built for 600.
STEM building delayed as we know but the governor confirmed this year’s priority list as been placed intact for the next cycle.
R1 Carnegie University recognition barely missed in the last review and confident we are positioned to reach it in the next review. Talked about the culture of supporting faculty in grants and research, especially productive has been what he called junior faculty.
Once again no tuition increase.
All on-line activities developed in house. UM Global Helped get a jump on the massive online rollout this spring. It will continue to play an important part of the UM moving forward.
Virtual advancement has been made with all student services.
Talked about continued successful efforts to partner with Memphis and Shelby County. A new economic impact study frames the symbiotic relationship that continues to grow. Economic impact also tied into the importance of the R1-CRU status.
Student performance indicators actually increased this spring.
Distributed over $7 million dollars of direct Care funds to students on financial aid.
My observation: the University of Memphis has transformed and the future is unlimited. We need to throw away the inferiority complex and victim mindset and no longer accept scraps. We need to step up with our financial support and our physical presence in supporting academic and athletic activities. Everyone has to find their own comfort zone but we have the leadership in place, the momentum is in place, the respect and notoriety growing.
