This was probably a smart move for both sides and I feel confident we will have another big man soon.
Linssen is a good back to the basket player and I'm sure he will have plenty of options in the portal, or I wouldn't be surprised if he's thinking about turning Pro. I bet he has options in Germany as well. However, this gives us flexibility to slot in a big that fits our style. A Grad transfer that might not be as much as an offensive threat as Linnsen but will be able to run the floor and protect them rim would be ideal. The portal is loaded rn, they should be able to find someone.
How loaded is the portal with players that have immediate eligibility? That’s the question. I’m sure we could very well have one or two bigs the following season. We need bigs that are immediately eligible, and best case scenario would still have at least two years of eligibility like what we just lost. That gives players time to gel and improve vs just hoping for a one-off deal.
I know a lot of folks are looking to spin this as a positive, but I’m not buying that lunch meat. We were already hurting for bigs, and now this puts us further in that hole vs if he didn’t go to the portal we’d only need a complimentary big.
This ain’t good, ideal, or easy to fix.

Rebuilding a basketball program isn't easy. When you're coming off 30 wins in 3 seasons, that's what you're doing. We all knew transfers were likely when Siddle got the job. If we don't have an immediately eligible big in a couple of weeks, I'll be concerned. This early in the offseason, I'm going to be optimistic.
My optimism died last season. Optimism is okay in doses but it’s not an optimal spot to live out of. It’s unrealistic.
Yes, we knew there would be transfers. We ALL also have discussed at length how not recruiting bigs was a travesty and a huge contributing factor in those “30 wins in 3 seasons”.
Turning a blind eye to reality in hopes we find eligible bigs as another one just left the program is fan malpractice, IMO. The reason I say that is because of the fact for last few seasons THAT specifically was a major factor in the angst around here.
I’m not saying Siddle can’t overcome it. I’m saying it’s not a good spot to be in at all. I’d be more comfortable with some of our other guards hitting the portal because that is what he’s been recruiting heavily. I’m not comfortable at all with bigs transferring because we don’t have a huge pool of candidates to fill the holes with and we were already behind the curve.
