This is a classic case of being the Amity mayor in Jaws. Sometimes it's good to panic, or rather, act out of an abundance of caution—even if it means taking an economic hit.

However, the same people needling him about reversing course were the ones telling me I'm nuts (or even racist) for suggesting all travel to China be shut down in January—referring to our fourth estate here.

There's a certain logic to economics trumping reacting to a crisis; if you are overly panicking, you will harm people's lives and livelihoods for nothing. And even though shutting down travel from China totally would have helped, there's still a high chance it was too late, and Trump should have recognized that. Even the most foolproof policy really can't stop all of the fools.

For anyone willing to notice, this was apparent very early in January it was going to be a pandemic way beyond SARS or MERS.
