RE: @CofC
A much higher percentage of teams lose 20 than lose 100 MLB games, so avoiding 20 losses is better than avoiding 100 MLB losses. Using five seasons as a sample, MLB had four teams lose 100 last year, three in 2018, none in 2017, one in 2016, and none in 2015. If the last two seasons are a trend, it's more common than it used to be, but for those five seasons it was done by 8 of 150 teams, which is 5 1/3 percent. For Men's Basketball I used 2018-2019 to have a complete season, and I only used one season because of how many teams there are. 86 of 353 teams (24.6 percent) lost at least 20 last season. That's 4.57 times the percent MLB had. Even MLB's seven in the last two seasons is less than half the rate of Men's Basketball last season. In order to be in the 24.6 percent of most losses in the last five seasons, MLB teams need at least 91 losses.
