I don’t know when it will happen, but at some point the powers-that-be in Deseret are going to have to sit down and take a hard, cold look at BYU’s experiment with Independence and ask themselves if this is really a good idea, or not. They went 10-3 the first year (2011) and are a combined 55-42 since then. Who knows, maybe that performance-level is all they really want or need from their football program.

I don't know about the dollars, but in a "national presence" sense, BYU has clearly been diminished over the past 10 years. For decades, from the 1980s - 2000s, BYU was clearly regarded as a "power level" program and respected as such by almost everyone. And they had a brand name to match.

BYU still has some of that, but Boise has almost taken their place in that regard. I'm not sure what the answer is, but they are withering on the vine, not just in terms of winning, but where it matters most, as a brand.
