Which is likely why football starts out non-scholarship. Also they see private schools like Butler and Drake playing non-scholarship, which probably makes it appealing to them.
If they were smart they would ditch hockey and focus on being great at everything else but every MN school is hockey addicted.
Why? Minnesota has a crazy amount of hockey talent in it and they're joining a conference with 3 NCHC members. It's much easier to be nationally relevant at hockey than basketball or football, and there's no way they're going to make waves in either sport as a Summit or Pioneer member.
Lots of talent and lots of competition. The only player in every other DI sport is the U of Minnesota, lots of room for growth there and that is where I would put my resources. Without hockey they could pursue scholarship football.
That said, they are a MN school so I doubt hockey is going anywhere.
