Back before I met my new wife she got a student visa to come to the US. She, well, her parents, had to provide comprehensive financials to the visa office in her country that listed all assets, particularly bank deposits, etc. The visa office wanted to ensure that she had ample reason to return to her country after visiting the US. I would think embassies world over would do the same thing. Even when I did the marriage visa thing with her I had to provide ample financial disclosure proving I could support her in the US.
Now, I know none of that applies to illegals; however, there's ample reason to deport them without even worrying about govt assistance.
What an effed up system.
Which part? I think the request for financial stuff is great. It's actually quite difficult for someone from my wife's country to actually get a visa to the US and the two nations are on friendly terms. Not sure about other countries.
The whole immigration process with her was time consuming but not extremely difficult. We did the interview thing and she got a two year conditional entry into the US. At the end of two years we had to jointly submit additional docs proving we were still married. After another couple years she got her US citizenship. The system works. IMO, it's people that aren't interested in doing things the lawful way that are the problem, not the law/process itself.
