I've been living near Auburn since Pearl was hired and he brought excitement, and most importantly, winning. Another thing that Pearl does that I'm not sure if Ehsan does is that he's very active on campus. I talked to him a few years ago at an Auburn baseball game after we signed the 4 game series with them. He buys students pizza during finals time. Participates in various on campus fundraisers. Students will support a guy who also supports them.
Fairly recent history doesn’t really support the idea that people show up to watch the Blazers when winning.
If you look at the game by game attendance during the Mike Anderson years (the best years as my time as a fan), the attendance still wasn’t very good against crappy opponents
Wasn't sustained long enough. Another four years like his first four at UAB may have done it. After he left, it was then 5 more seasons before we could make it back to the newly expanded field. Add another 4 for the next NCAA win. We built our program on beating teams we weren't supposed to beat and winning games in the NCAA. The landscape may have changed over those 40 years but UAB basketball's recipe for success has not.
Plus we also played big name conference opponents. There are zero bball opponents now that interest me in the least. Back then we had Memphis, Louisville, Cincy, Marquette. They're a far cry from WKU, ODU, and Rice.
Parts of the Davis' era were well attended and some games in Haase's last season. Our problem is no follow through. We had a nice start to what appeared to be a revival by beating ISU and winning the Season Title in CUSA. But then we blew it in the CUSA tournament and it has been downhill ever since. Davis era had the same pattern. Some really good regular seasons, then we blow it late.
