EP started the Rx habit exactly back then

which was what eventually killed him

The way I took it, not the Rx, John was saying the mystique of Elvis died when he went into the Army. John probably was a nonconformist and expected Elvis to be the same because of his persona but he joined the Army which is fairly conformist.
