All state appropriations from the state legislature are made on that schedule. Perhaps UAB can operate on another schedule of its own, and this year July 1 was on a Sunday so the first weekday was July 2nd.

It has become a common practice for many state school districts to get loans from local banks during the summer to tide them through until the new budget money comes in on Oct 1st so they can open school in August. Paying back these loans becomes the first order of business every fall since it all must be done again the next summer.

UAB's fiscal year is the same as every other government agency of the State of Alabama

If all state government agencies have a fiscal year of July 1st to June 30th, how do they square up with state funding based on the Oct 1st to Sept 30th fiscal year? Maybe it would be better to move the state's FY to match the FY of its agencies. Or move BOTH to the calendar year - Jan to Dec.

03-banghead UAB and every other state agency's fiscal year starts October 1st.
