Had you been a Bama student back in the early 60s, you would understand the context of the handwritten campaign sign placed outside Bidgood Hall which said "Back the Machine - vote for Jean".

One factor in "Greek power" during those years was their parties were the only ones on campus that could offer keg beer and hard liquor. Their political power even then allowed the open use of such beverages without risk of legal blowback. Independents giving parties could only offer soft drinks.
