I grew up in the Piedmont area of North Carolina but in the Piedmont area that was still very much in the realm of having a mountain sound. It is an accent that is made fun of and comes across as "ignorant" to many. Living to the east of that area now the accent is enough different that my students notice and ask where I am from.

I don't generally mind accents, as I appreciate the local color, but his was a bit strong. I do like to have the name of our school pronounced correctly, and I don't think he had it down 100% but it was closer than others pronouce Appalachian.
