Well, if you save money, and invest it, then you accrue wealth beyond your salary. I realize that requires planning and commitment, but it is how you become wealthy and self sufficient.

Oh, and nothing gets you a raise faster than going out and getting a better job.

That is all well in good when you check covers the necessities.

The only "necessity" a check is required to cover is the value of your labor.
