New Stadium in Downtown Birmingham Takes a Step Forward

The County Commission today unanimously approved appropriating $30M towards the new stadium to be built downtown next to the BJCC (where the CUSA tournament was). This is the first piece of the financial puzzle.

The City of Birmingham is expected to contribute $90M with the rest coming from the BJCC, UAB's lease, and corporate partners.

Not totally a done deal, but the county commissioner that's leading the charge said he expects all financial commitments to be finalized within 60-90 days and to be breaking ground by the end of the year. Construction is expected to take ~2 years with the goal of opening for the 2020 UAB football season.

Stadium would be $174M with 45k permanent seats with the ability to add 10k temporary seats if necessary. Part of the plan also includes spending $123M to renovate the BJCC's Legacy Arena, Concert Hall, and existing convention space.

Exciting stuff!
