However, they were ineligible due to probation from the Butch Davis era and Georgia Tech played in the ACC Championship game. Record books so no such title and it got roundly mocked in the media and internet.

My biggest problem with this is giving out rings for being ACC Coastal Division Champions, not for doing it while on probation so you weren't recognized as champions.

Didnt Auburn hand out National Championship rings in 2004 when they went undefeated and were not chosen for the BCS NCG?

Yep

If you're undefeated why not

Undefeated really has nothing to do with it, as being undefeated is never a requirement for being a champion in any sport i can think of.

USF has just as much basis as UCF to print up national championship banners and rings, we can say that at 10-2, we should have qualified for an expanded playoff, and nobody can say for sure we wouldn't have won it if we did. It's no more silly than UCF's claim.

Bottom line is that the Alabama - Georgia winner is going to be the official national champion of all of the conferences that are contractual members of the CFP, and that includes the AAC, and therefore, UCF.

Actually undefeated has everything to do with it

No legitimate sport has undefeated teams missing a postseason
