I doubt he's on the radar of any school with that kind of money yet

He may be vested, but if he left today his pension benefit would be based on the highest three years out of the last 10 years. He would not get credit for his new increased salary. If he's really playing the retirement game, he'll be at UAB for 2-3 more years.

There will be a day that he leaves, that is for sure. Even The One in Tuscaloosa will leave, eventually. He may have it in his head that he wants to stick it out to hit X, Y, or Z goals but in the end you have to recognize that this is a job for him and it's a career. At the end of the day he's going to do what is best for himself.

It's true about his highest three years, but he has pushed past his old lower salaries. His highest three now are in the $600,000 range. Sure, the $1 million salary will bump it even more, but any step up from UAB would be a MUCH higher salary now, and so worrying about AL retirement becomes much less of a concern than before.

For those who don't really have a grasp of the Teachers Retirement System payout formula, it is #years of service X 2% of average of 3 highest years' salary over the past 10 years of service in the System. So, for example, if he has 7 years and thats it,, when he reaches full retirement age he would get 14% of ( assuming this is his average, $600K) / year = $84 K / year. From that would be deducted his health insurance and taxes, if applicable. Nothing to sneeze at, but he wont feel like he won the lottery either, especially if you factor in about 2 more decades of inflation before he can start to collect. The big attraction of the retirement system is if one actually puts in 25-30 years of service, then the retirement benefit can be pretty significant.
