Side note for Navy vets (I was in the Air Force, so have no clue about the Navy). My son left for Navy Boot camp 4 days ago and is currently at RTC Great Lakes. I'm guessing he is getting yelled at a lot and getting all of his medical processing in P Days right now. At least from what I read online. All I got was a 15 second call when he got there. Sounded like he was reading from a script. "I have arrived safely at RTC, all of my stuff will be mailed in a box, I will call in 3 weeks, bye". That was literally the conversation. LOL.

I went through boot at Orlando in 1968, so not sure my experience is still relevant. It ain't easy, but I'm guessing it's simpler than other service boot camps.

They yell at you a lot, but they don't really try to kill you, lol.

And I'm sure that was a generic note sent to all parents.

Did you do any tours in ‘nam?

I was obviously in during that era, and volunteered to be a machine gunner on a copter in 'Nam, but the list was so long they never got to me.

So, I essentially spent about 2 years in Pensacola working on radio and radar gear in training aircraft (T-28s), and going on test flights in the back seat, and then the remainder of my 4 years on an aircraft carrier (USS Forrestal, CVA-59), either in drydock in Portsmouth, VA, or in the Med protecting the beach bars from women of the evening selling cheap colored water drinks to sailors.

Ah well that doesn’t sound too bad lol!

It's why I joined the Navy for 4 years active duty, instead of the Army for two,
