I like it.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using CSNbbs mobile app

My nephew has a Bachelors in Economics and Performance Percussion, but from Oberlin. Shepherd wouldn't let him double major.

I've heard of Rice music students managing to get a dual degree, B. Mus. and B.A., but they had to to sneak it past their music advisors. The Shepherd School of Music officially doesn't allow it. Shepherd wants their students completely focused on music and only seem to view distribution and general university requirements as a technicality of being part of Rice, but the Registrar/rest of administration only care that the student completes the stated minimums for the two degrees. Students who do this have to come in with enough AP credit that they can use their few elective hours to complete B.A. requirements and hope that their advisors in Shepherd don't realize that they're taking enough advanced classes in their second degree to graduate with it or else that can be used as grounds to dismiss them from the music program. The School of Music doesn't realize what these students have done until they're walking across the stage at commencement by which point it's too late to revoke their B. Mus.

The School of Architecture also doesn't allow dual degrees*, but I never met an archi who was able to accomplish all of their work without putting in 60 hours per week. I don't see how it could be done. At the same time, there isn't much chance for a musi to get a B.S. They just require too many hours, even taking the few summer school classes they might get to sneak through around the school's expectation of summer performances.

*If I recall, one of the reasons Andrew Luck cited for going to Stanford instead of Rice was that they allowed him to get a B.A. in architecture while playing football. Rice only offers the architecture B.A. to students who were attempting in good faith to get the B. Arch. and decided late in their time at Rice that they don't want to pursue a career in architecture. It's supposed to be an out for those students to be able to graduate in four years instead of having to spend another three or four semesters working on a major from another school at Rice. The B. Arch. is so intensive that it's not open to double majors or varsity athletes, and admission to the B. Arch. program is prerequisite for finishing with the B.A. in architecture. I wouldn't be surprised if Shepherd has the same rule, but I've never heard of a top athlete who was also a top musician.

I knew two people (vocal and piano performance majors) who double majored. One in economics and one in German studies. But they were certainly in the minority of musis and both had sufficient AP credit that they were able to use their "free" class slots towards their second major instead of having to using them purely for distribution requirements.
