Someone is leaving out important information...

Well there's no doubt about that, the last figures available from the NCAA had OU at $134m in overall athletic revenue and WVU at $90m. That's a whopping $44m gap.

The issue here is just the vagaries of 3rd tier rights and whatnot, a relatively small part of the overall picture.
Finally someone says it.
Every year we see these posts about Big 12 revenue distribution. Paper napkin accounting of tier 3 dollars, inferences and speculation run amuck. Months earlier when someone posts total revenue for all the schools, the top schools make $130 million or better. Seeing schools that rank in the 30s or below bragging about $35 million from the conference is silly

Yes, the bulk of revenue for big-time schools still comes from local sources, primarily attendance x ticket prices and all their ancillaries (parking, seat licenses, suits, etc.).

That's why in a P5 conference you can have an enormous revenue gap. The #1 school in a given P5 might be at $140m in athletic revenue and the #12 school at $65m, even though they are getting the exact same $30m from the massively talked about conference media deal.

There's no substitute for building a huge, rabid local fan base that will pay through the nose to support your programs.

That is something that is often forgotten. That's where the really big $ are. And that is why a Florida St. may not be interested in going to the Big 12 for more $ or a Virginia to the Big 10 for more $ or a North Carolina to the SEC for more $.

IMO, North Carolina will never leave the ACC unless the $$$ gap gets absurd, and then maybe not then. And if they do, it will never be to the SEC.

Perhaps even more than Texas, they care about appearances and status, and to them that means two things: (1) we're the enlightened, progressive south not the unreconstructed hick-dixie south, and (2) we are the Kings of this domain.

In the ACC, they are the #1 school, unchallenged and unquestioned, the sun the conference revolves around no matter how many football titles FSU or Clemson wins, like Texas in the Big 12. Anyplace else, and they'd just be one of many. And in the SEC, they'd be one of many sitting alongside those trailer-park hicks, LOL.

The only place they'll go if the ACC ever collapses is the B1G.
