Rams, Chargers to stay put as opening of new NFL stadium in Inglewood delayed to 2020

Quote:Excavation of the site, which formerly housed the Hollywood Park racetrack, started in November, but the teams said that weather delays in January, February and March have made it infeasible for the stadium to open for the 2019 NFL season, as scheduled.

Instead, the Rams will remain in the Coliseum that season and the Chargers will remain at Stub Hub Center in Carson.

The announcement could have far-reaching ramifications beyond some frustrating logistics issues for the two clubs. It could also mean Los Angeles losing out on hosting the Super Bowl in 2021.

By league rule, a new stadium must be open at least two full regular seasons to be eligible to host a Super Bowl.

But by delaying the Inglewood stadium’s opening by one year, that means the NFL might have to bend some rules to enable Los Angeles to host the Super Bowl in 2021 or lose the game all together.
