RE: How will NY's offer of free tuition to state resident affect the SUNY's?
My wife and I make a combined $135k. I love the idea that we're sooooo well-off that our children (if we have any) will be able to pay for college themselves. My wife has been done with college for ten years and is still paying off her loans but we're sooooo filthy rich that we can afford to pay for other people's kids.
I would support this if it were a STEM-and-stay program. We don't need better-educated baristas. We should only be doing this for people going into science, engineering or other high-demand fields. At least the state got the "stay" part right. But the income limit is ridiculous. Who cares if some legitimately rich kid gets free tuition? If he or she stays in New York the state will benefit.
