Watching the images (not quite live), leading to impact, I was reminded of a tale of the Ranger 9 lunar probe. A simple Google search turned up confirmation that I wasn't just imagining things.

Ranger 9 was a mission to take detailed images of the lunar surface, ending in impact on the surface. The last image in the series could resolve an object one foot in diameter. Similar to the view of DART's last seconds.

"Later the images were shown to the press as a continuous-motion movie, leading astronaut Wally Schirra to yell 'bail out you fool!' just before the final frame."
