In fairness, Ray Alborn tried what would have been a school record 54 yarder on 4th and 6 from a kicker playing in his first college game who had never kicked a college field goal before. Kick hit the upright but kicker was roughed, 15 yard penalty and first down. 3 plays and 2 sacks later, they scored a school record (at the time) 55 yard fg.... or so I've heard

I seem to remember that this guy was some walk-on who won a kicking competition for the job earlier in the week, although perhaps my memory fails me in that regard.
