That's not to say they can't be successful with the TO, but they will struggle to play from behind(something they haven't had to do much at the FCS level) unless they can succeed in recruiting where GT has struggled.
How many times have I posted the 2012 quarter final vs ODU. We were two touchdowns down in the third qtr and won by two scores against the #1 passing offense in FCS. I know, I know, that was FCS granted, but the biggest difference is depth. Our passing like Techs isn't up to pre NFL standards like UGA's or Bama's because we simply don't throw the ball that much, we have before to great effect in prior coaching regimes. Now we were blessed with Jaybo Shaw who transferred from GT with CJM. Jaybo was a very well rounded quarterback, and an accurate passer when we did throw the ball. One of our TDs vs Bama was a big pass play. So although running the ball is our MO, it really has depended on personnel.
Our coaches will scheme to the strengths of our players.
Our red shirt freshman that shined against UF is more of a hybrid with similarities to both Jaybo and McKinnon.
We have some capable receivers. If we do open up the pass, look out, because that deep ball makes the dive that much more likely to be a huge gash right up the gut, or a receiver wide open behind everyone. It really is a thing of beauty when it all clicks on the same day.
Throwing against FCS secondaries and as a FCS power you had somewhat of a bargaining chip to attract the top FCS caliber QBs and WRs you might not otherwise be able to. "You may not get to throw/thrown to as much, but you'll be playing for championships."
The Sun Belt secondaries won't be exponentially better than the FCS secondaries, but they will be a noticeable step up, your OOC opponents secondaries will often be night and day different. As far as recruiting goes, I expect most QBs who can really throw it and WRs who can go up and get the ball who get other FBS offers will be tougher to land.
And I've watched enough GT to see how open a WR can get in the TO, I've also seen GT QBs miss wide open WRs by five yards or more on many occasions.
