Penny’s coaching rating this year
Anybody besides me think Penny is doing his best job coaching of his career this year? Especially considering the injuries on top of blending all the newcomers and the lack of 5 star players and the slow clearing process for some new guys.

There are a couple of games I would surely like to have back but I also realize the transfers other than Davis had to have time to adjust to the higher level of play.

That can't be right. We have jabronis in here that say we're headed to the NIT.

I'm of the opinion that Penny has been showing improvement every year. Makes perfect sense considering he's never coached at a level higher than high school or AAU prior to taking over the Tigers. I can't think of another individual who could have done any better under those circumstances, and I look forward to a long and illustrious future for the team with Penny at the helm.

No jabronis allowed in the discussion.

I agree he's improving every year. I blame him for the UCF loss - but I absolutely credit him for the Auburn win and the Cincy win.

Who is responsible for a lack of 5 star players

Penny probably coaches better when he doesn't have as many players to sub in.

He's doing good enough to keep us somewhat relevant. Overall for his tenure a solid B.

But just think where we would be without the Seton Hall and UCF debacles. 17-3 and looking forward to a 4 or 5 seed in the tourney. Our NET would probably be in the teens right now.

Teams drop games they should win. Houston lost to Alabama at home when they should have won, and most recently lost to Temple at home which they really should have won. It's how it goes sometimes. Both Seton Hall and UCF were close games, about as close as they can get. Neither losses will make or break our season, and we won't need a NET in the teens to make the tourney.

At some point we need to not worry about squeaking into the tournament... would be nice to be more worried about our seed.

And those losses could make or break our season if we wind up an 8 seed and lose to a 9 or almost certainly lose the the 1 in the 2nd round, rather than being a 3 or 4 with an easy path to the Sweet 16.

I'm not here to say Penny is a horrible coach... he's pretty good. But I sure miss the days of playing for seeding instead of being one loss away from being left out. I hope we get back to that sometime.

Houston may have dropped from a 1 seed to a 2 with those losses (their only losses) which is exactly where I want to be.

we still have UCF (quad 2) at home and Houston (quad 1) home/away...so we have opportunities remaining. plus, the AAC tourney.

miles to go before we sleep...

Squeaking in would be last four in and I'm not convinced that's where we'll end up. None of the professional analysts seem to think we are at the moment, for example.

We aren't there at the moment but one bad loss would put us there which is my point. Instead of being 17-3 with breathing room, we are walking the razor's edge.

I agree with you, it would be amazing if we were looking at a top seed. Unfortunately, this team probably doesn't have the same ceiling as last year's for example. Personally, I feel good about the rest of the schedule, and I even think we have a good chance to split Houston. Glass half full I suppose, but we're not in danger yet.
