...would the Big XII be wise to offer SMU now?
...which I guess would primarily be a 'pre-emptive strike' to prevent the PAC from nabbing SMU?
Not sure how the 'additive' media deal works for the Big XII concerning a 'non-P5' - the scuttlebutt was that the deal allows for 'additive' P5 teams to come in at full share, but not 'G5's... even so, it would seem that SMU would have about the same 'deal' from either conference, and, everything else being equal, would probably prefer the conference they are surrounded by.
TCU folks might not like it, but I think they play every year anyway for the Big Skillet or whatever, so... might as well become conference mates (again).

If the Big 12 wanted to make a pre-emptive strike on the Pac, they would take SDSU. I love SMU, but we don't add much that they don't already have.

No.
SMU would make more sense for the Pac 12 than the Big 12.

I do not think the PAC has any interest in SMU, and if they do, I do not think the nB12 would or should care.
SMU just isn't worth much, IMO.

RE: ...would the Big XII be wise to offer SMU now?
Distance aside, SMU doesn't bring the facilities that are going to attract major conference interest. Ford Stadium, in its current setup, would be smaller than Martin Stadium and the new end zone pavilion would still not raise it above 40,000.
(Never understood why SMU doesn't move a home game or two the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair, except that they probably couldn't draw any larger crowd there.)

This. The more I read, the more value I see in SDSU. San Diego County has more than 3 million people. San Diego is the #28 DMA. There is one major league professional franchise there, and it's not a football team. SDSU is an academic fit in the Big 12.
Yormark talks about the fourth time zone, and SDSU is the way to get it. The B12 should strike while the Pac is trying to figure out what it wants to be after USC/UCLA are gone.
By doing this, the B12 becomes a coast-to-coast conference, and locks the Pac out of SoCal.
SMU would be fine in the B12, but the B12 doesn't need them. TCU and Baylor would block them, regardless.

The Big 12 can't afford to be a coast-to-coast conference. They don't have Big Ten money. They can't be sending non-revenue sports from Morgantown and Cincinnati to San Diego.

This. The big 12 already has Texas covered, no need to add the 7th best program in the state for that little extra. The Pac, otoh, could use a foothold in Tx, and SMU is a great add for them.

I agree. Coast to coast requires Big 10 type money. And there's nobody valuable enough to justify it for the Big 12 or ACC.

SMU did play at the Cotton Bowl in the 70's, before moving to Texas Stadium. If I remember correctly, they also played there while Ownby Stadium was being rebuilt into the present-day Ford Stadium.
This would definitely be a way to break them out of the Highland Park bubble. I don't know if it would work.
Two weekends at the fair are already taken: OU-Texas and the State Fair Classic (Grambling vs Prairie View).

I'd like to see SMU to offer a home and "home" to a blue blood program where the return trip is at the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair and we split the revenue. Would be great exposure for an elite program that doesn't get a lot of games in Texas

Grabbing USF would be a good move. Now you really have a market share in Florida.

No, TV market redundancy.

SMU is redundant as long as TCU is in the Big XII. So is South Florida.

The Grambling-PVAMU game has variously been on Friday or Saturday night. An afternoon game would not be out of the question, or on one of the other two weekends. Way back when, SMU and the Cowboys played on consecutive days at the Fair.

No. IMO the best G5 options for the B12 right now is SDSU, USF, Memphis and Fresno but other than SDSU and maybe Fresno (a package deal) there's no urgency to add the other 2 right now.
Edit: The only way I'd see it as a good move is if they have any concern over one of their Texas schools leaving.
