As good a choice as any to spend the next 5 years complaining about.

I'd still take him, but I think that even with this he is still way outside Rice's price range. What he is good at is improving a defense with what talent is left over by an offensive guru head coach like Mike Leach or Lincoln Riley. He's not going to build a Georgia or Alabama defense because he is not going to get enough of the talent to build that kind of defense, at least not where he is working now.

The other guy that I like in a similar situation is Leach's current DC at Mississippi State, Zach Arnett. I think he may be a better DC than Grinch, and he runs a 3-3-5, which I think may be a better fit for what defenders Rice can recruit.

Either of those would be fine with me, but I doubt we will ever have a coach that we are happy with. Even if the guy wins 10/yr and goes to a bowl, we will be complaining that he cannot get us to the next level, that he has plateaued, that he cannot win the big ones, etc.

So it doesn't matter who we hire. he won't do enough.

Call me PessimisticOwl, but my opinion is based on 60 years as an Owl fan going back to and including jess Neely.

I believe there is somebody on the Bengals coaching staff that might have those qualities... I'm surprised nobody has brought him up already as part of this conversation.

RE: 2022-23 Football Coaching Carousel
A number of posts I was going to link, but it would make the post too long

49, I couldn't agree with you more... +1,000

and Land, while I don't really disagree with you, I think you're perhaps too stuck in the idea that the 'leader' needs to first and foremost have traditional qualities.... and this is where you come by the conclusion that this sort of person will avoid us.... because everybody else wants that person, and they won't hamstring him like we will.... and almost none of them have any particular affinity for Rice, nor can they 'sell' Rice because they didn't live it.

A head coach in 2023 doesn't even really HAVE to coach at all. He doesn't even have to be the one making the decisions to 'go for it' or 'punt' on 4th and a foot. I mean, that's what everyone else does... but so what?? What they have to do is inspire, motivate, direct, coordinate and hold accountable those who DO coach.... which of course requires an understanding of the game/what it takes... but more to our situation, requires an understanding of what obstacles and advantages Rice presents... and what sort of person wants to accept those challenges. The kind of kid who will choose the harder path, specifically BECAUSE it is harder, like 49 and I and RU and others did... and the problem with that is although some will certainly go into coaching... you accepted the challenge of a Rice degree most often to do something more traditionally associated with a top 20 school degree, like Dr, Lawyer, Business executive... all things that would be all but impossible to ALSO go into coaching as a full time career. But yes, there ARE some of 'us' who go in to coaching... but usually they will end up utilizing their degree later and/or going into the NFL.... often things like player development as opposed to position coaches who then grow to be head coaches. Said differently... the talent pool for Rice guys who resemble the 'traditional' path is unbelievably shallow... but... like Dilfer or Deion or Berkman or Cruz can find people who shared THEIR dream, they can SELL their experience of Rice and the NFL/MLB, and the great advantages that a Rice degree offer AFTER what is a successful college and then most often a very short pro career.

Bottom line, we need to assemble a great team of coaches... like we need to assemble a great team of players... and if you can't recruit a 5 star QB, then you have to scheme around the guy you CAN get... and we're simply suggesting that we take the same approach with regard to the staff.

Taking the 'up and comer' is one stategy... but it is a risk for us because that person, if successful, won't stay and/or we won't compensate them enough and not hamstring them otherwise to maintain.... and if they are not successful, they are often good enough to muddle by. Only occassionally do you get such an abject failure as Berndt.... and of course, we don't often get the 'rising star'...

Casey would be a great part of the staff in some position... including potentially HC.

Exactly the kinda guy I was talking about in my earlier post!

He hasn't come up because most people are locked into the traditional "gotta pay your dues" suffer through years of coaching at various levels, "earn" a lower level HC job, then move up the ranks by winning and moving, winning and moving, developing no loyalty to any program but your own back pocket and trophy shelf path!

When this job opens and it will.... he needs to be on the list for sure!

Wonder if he might be on a JK list if Stanford hires Bloomgren away about a week from now.

I was part of the group that convinced Ken to go. He had lost the team and change was absolutely necessary. I say that despite the fact that I really, really liked Ken a lot. It was just a very sad and unfortunate situation.

Liberty hires Coastal Carolina's HC Jamey Chadwell. Future C-USA member Flames are paying $4M/yr for 5 years. I don't think there's any 3 other coaches in the conference that would get a combined salary that high.

Good hire for them. Another candidate we missed out on. I hope he does well, and stays.
Tom Herman to the Owls as new Head Coach...just not the right owls...grrrr...

How bad would it be if Herman at FAU outrecruits Bloomgren for Texas players. I could see it happening.

I asked over in the 2022 Offseason and Transfer Thread what folks thought our prospects were for next season. Perhaps you could venture a guess?
