A theory on Pac-12 expansion
Assuming no likely moves involving the other P5 leagues (which at this point I would think is the slight betting favorite), could the Pac-12 expand using the following criteria?

Pay both new members and OSU and WSU half shares for the next six-year contract, three-quarter shares for the one following, and full shares for the contract 12 or so years down the road.

For example, if the Pac-12 gets 300 million to disperse, 30 million could go to each of the eight schools not named OSU and WSU, and 15 million to OSU, WSU, SDSU, and SMU.

Considering that OSU and WSU are the weakest brands and should be the biggest proponents of expansion especially if the Pac-12 is raided in the future, could this be possible?

Why do that? You are essentially saying that adding new members doesn’t increase the size of the pie.

They don't. That's the point. You would add them to get into SoCal and Texas.

SMU is 5th or 6th in the DFW pecking order.

Lol. So a PAC8 plus the mountain west schools they hire to fill in as conference members? Talk about going through the stages of grief that the PAC is dead as we knew it.

Well, we could stop pretending the PAC is elitist, and know it is just emotional. Revenue raping Oregon St and WSU plus adding Cal St schools at bargain prices to only delay the formal death of the PAC is an option though.

Likely UT, A&M, OU, TCU, probably even Baylor and Tech right there imo.

If Kliavkoff did decide to do that, he would be watching Oregon State and Washington State leave for the Big XII, and Oregon and Washington would be pleading the B1G and the ACC to take them. Kliavkoff would be no better than Larry Scott then. No, this is the very reason why Kliavkoff was hired to begin with: stabilize the league. I actually have more faith in George Kliavkoff than Larry Scott. I feel like USC and UCLA pulled the rug out from under him, and Oregon & Washington didn't help matters by applying to the B1G, but I have to believe that he knew that these events were foregone conclusions before he even took the job!! USC and UCLA had already planned to leave back when Larry Scott was still commish IMO- in other words, it's Larry Scott's fault, not George Kliavkoff''s. What is under Kliavkoff"s watch is the rest of the Pac-12.

SDSU/BYU is the pair that increases value (that and the <5% chance of taking 4+ Big 12 schools).

I think the Networks would prefer to split their far west properties, much like the NFL. Would not be surprised to see ESPN stick with their $25M offer only to turn around and offer $30-$50 for the top 4 to join the Big 12 or ACC. Heck, low-ball, let the 4 corners leave, and then you can get the crème of the Pac-6 crop for peanuts.

It doesn’t even matter who all is above SMU since they’re not going to feasibly leave their conferences for a shaky PAC

Edit - no one in the BIG XII would be leaving for the PAC is what I mean.

This is becoming a circular argument. If SDSU and SMU don’t being any additional revenue, then there’s no reason to bring them in. And to other’s point, SMU is behind at least UT, A&M and Tech, and probably TCU and Baylor in the DFW markets. The latter two will continue to be popular because they play local teams. SMU to PAC 12 will not have that.

RE: A theory on Pac-12 expansion
Is SMU merely being talked about because they appear more "available"?

Remember that the TX/OU and USC/UCLA moves apparently aren't til 2024.

At that point, most of the Big12 schools could potentially be "available"

Is SMU still a choice, when compared to other B12 options?

For that matter, is San Diego state?

Which is impressive for the DFW pecking order when you consider how many positives SMU brings to the table.

SMU plays in the AAC not the Big 12.

SDSU TTech with a longer GoR. I know TTech doesn't really bring in much, but the geography is tolerable and they improve the BBall by some margin. Otherwise, you have to hold the nose and invite BSU or Hawaii and possibly Zaga.

Yes, that was my point.

Are people talking about SMU, because they "seem" to be easier to invite than a school from the B12.

Bingo. At the end of the day, if SMU, who isn’t a particularly great fit for the PAC, isn’t accretive to the revenue stream of the existing members, which I can’t see them being, I don’t see why the PAC would add them.

RE: A theory on Pac-12 expansion
The best pac move would be adding San Diego state, BYU, Kansas and Texas Tech. If BYU can’t get past the cal types than either Houston, New Mexico or even Kansas State which might help bring Kansas which than could help bring Texas tech. Maybe the best move is start with combo of Kansas and Kansas state to get to 12, than the combo of San Diego state and Texas tech to get to 14. The last combo could be BYU and Hawaii football
