bad idea
1. the Big 12 needs as much national exposure as possible even if for slightly less dollars
2. conference networks are only successful if you have a large media company behind you to "cram" the channel on cable and sat MSOs by including it in the negotiations for all of their other desirable networks
that is mainly ESPN (ESPN is not that great of a partner and needs no additional football content) and even Fox is not that great at cramming a network
3. it ca be years before negotiations come up between a media company and the cable and sat MSOs and as of now many are successfully resisting cramming and starting to do so more and more
4. the Big 12 needs a shorter term media contract in the range of 6 or 7 years......a network would barely be up and rolling by then and probably not even close to penetration of cable and SAT MSOs
5. cable subs are falling at a rate of something like 4 million per year and gaining.....that is a dying proposition
6. the ACC got chumped on their network....they gave up the OBLIGATION for ESPN to show games on ABC, ESPN, ESPN II in exchange for ESPN moving some of those games over the the ACCn with much lower coverage and with ESPN recovering 100% of the cost of running that network before any profit sharing
as of now the network is only a couple of years old and supposedly with the new "concast" deal they will get the bIG MoNeY, but with concast losing something like 1 million subs a year for how long.....probably not very long especially with another 3+ million being lost by the other cable and SAT MSOs
so you are allowing your content to be moved to a lower penetration network, allowing ESPN to show more games against your conference games ON THEIR MAN CHANNELS, and you are now having ESPN get 100% cost recovery to deliver your games before you get any profit sharing......on a media that is looking to have 50% fewer subscribers overall in a few years and a media that is pushing back against having channels crammed on them which raises rates.....which increases cancellations
conference networks are an idea that has come and is going away faster and faster and the Big 12 needs none of that there is no benefit only downsides
