RE: John Cunningham Interview W/ Ch 9
The university shot itself in the foot by building the rec center so close to the stadium. It makes it impossible to expand on that side.

Nippert is the only big stadium I can think of where the seating stops before the end of the end zone. Even open horseshoes like Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Illinois, Purdue, and Louisville all go 10-20 yards beyond that. If the Rec Center weren't in the way, UC could easily put another section of sideline seating beyond the North End Zone, along with extra amenities and end zone seating.

Maybe if we delay the decision long enough, the campus rec (already 17 years old now) will become outdated and we can tear it down to fill in the horseshoe.04-cheers

Just saw this tweet minutes ago, which is apt giving the discussion in this thread about stadium size. Oregon State capacity going down to 26,000.

Oregon State is now at $91.6 million in philanthropic gifts for the renovation of West side of Reser Stadium, per @BeaverAD Scott Barnes.

In 2022, football capacity will be 26,000 using the North, South and East. Season-ticket holders and students will eat up most of the tix.

That's just for this upcoming year. OSU has had this weird hybrid of a stadium, with one new, modern side to go with a grandstand that looked like it belonged at a state fairgrounds. They imploded it this morning (cool video if you're interested), and they'll be finishing the stadium next year as they play at reduced capacity. To the point of capacity, however, I believe their new capacity will still be shy of 40K - it's been 44K or so.

Ok that makes sense. Looking at their home attendance, the average attendance was 29,585 people this year in Corvallis. In 2019 it was 32,424. Seems like 44K is way to big for them. Like i said earlier in this thread, its betters to have a packed house in a smaller stadium than 10-12K empty seats in a larger one.

Fully agree! The expansion is going to include a new Campus Welcome Center for prospective students, their campus wellness center, and what appears to be some amazing facilities. It'll be a great stadium, but with a capacity in the 35K to 39K range. Seems like a smart, right-sized investment, which is why I'm more about adding comfort and amenities to Nippert rather than capacity.

Oregon State is a very good comparison to UC based on metro area and US News ranking.

But it's a significantly smaller university. Oregon State has 66% the students, 60% the alumni, 60% the endowment, and 50% of the research output as UC.

Honestly, Oregon State is more akin to OU than it is to UC. Corvallis is a great college town in wine country (along with the best brewery in Oregon), but it's two hours from Portland, where the vast majority of alums live. Along with Wazzu (and WSU is truly in the middle of nowhere), they're clearly a step below the rest of their conference mates with respect to resources, student body, recruits, etc - much closer in profile to Mountain West schools like Colorado State, Utah State, UNM than other PAC-12 schools.
