Quote:My point is that it’s a travesty that the G5 have no access to the playoffs under an 8 or 12 team format.
In a 12-team playoff -- the top G5 will have a guaranteed spot, IMO.
There's 12 teams in the NY/BCS bowls. Top G5 is an auto-qualifier right now.
All that'd change as far as teams are concerned:
- Instead of the Top 4 teams in the country having their own playoff, they instead get a bye in the full-blown
actual playoff
- No conference / NY-bowl setups anymore -- replaced by probably max # of teams from a conference to get in (not that much different in the end)
- Less $$ made if losing in the 1st non-bowl round VS going to a big $$ NY bowl
For an 8-team playoff, I think the Top G5 could make it without it being some rarity -- even with Cinci/UCF/Houston going to the B12.
I don't think it's going 8-teams though. 12 makes way more sense. NFL has an extra reg-season, so we get an extra week before conflicting with NFL Playoffs.
But with 8 teams, the main goal is to ensure all P5 Champs make it in. OK. Add a Top G5, and that's only 2 left -- well, yeah, not guaranteed.
But I think if they ENSURE a P5 Champ getting in, they'll pretty much have to Lean on a G5 Champ getting in -- you can't preach the reason for expansion being for Conf Champs always Needing a chance, when, well, you push out G5 Champs too harshly. So something like top G5 Champ needing to be Ranked in Top 16. People against this, when you have someone like WMU or NIU years ago being "it" at #15 -- the retort would be "it gives the #1 team in the country the reward of an easy layup earned, like in the NCAA tourney. And sometimes the P12 or B12 Champ will be solidly below #8 in the country too when the underdog wins their champ game."
