This is such a great example. It's something so great, you just assume it's been around forever. Nope- 4 years. And there wasn't a big production of "creating a tradition." This thing happened- Tom Petty, a Gainesville native, died. Folks said, let's honor him by playing one of his songs. The crowd jumped in, it was a cool moment, and the folks said, hey, this is awesome. We should keep doing this! That is how a tradition is born. A tradition doesn't come with an instruction manual.

They've been playing that song at games for years. I've been in that stadium when they did it. But yeah, the whole singing it in the 2nd half thing did start after he died, I am corrected.
It is indeed quite a cool tradition ... it wasn't entirely organic, however. Someone made the call to do it and then made the call to do it every game. It doesn't get on the soundsystem by itself. Of course, the fans took over and now it has a life of its own.
Maybe something will happen at UAB that organically becomes a tradition. I can't think of anything in my 30+ years of being around it that comes close to qualifying.

Fire Ray Watts? That caught on organically. The basketball game right after the shutdown, when all the students wore black and chanted Fire Ray Watts on and off the entire game was something I'll never forget. I still think that energy helped propel our basketball team to the NCAA that season. If there was someway we could harness that student energy again for our sports, it could be a real difference maker.

I agree. Shorten it about 15 seconds.

This is what I meant by a "new tradition". Something that will be new that will eventually turn into a tradition. Whatever the song the blazers will run out of the tunnel to will eventually become a "new tradition".
UCF started playing Zombie Nation's 'Kernkraft 400' and chanting "U-C-F Knights!" when they opened Spectrum Stadium and the stadium started bouncing when they jumped to the song. This coined the new nickname of their stadium, The Bounce House. That was a "new tradition" they started.
While yes the jumping and the bouncing of the stadium was organic, someone made the decision to choose a song that would pump a crowd and fit well with those 4 syllables.

That game is the only reason I ever bought a black UAB shirt. It was one hell of a night. Great memory now, given that we won.
I'm ready to celebrate! Let's gooooooooooooooo!

We need to teach the crowd how to do Blazer Thunder like this. I think this has much more impact than simply clapping faster and faster. Note also that it's about thirty seconds start to finish.

I'm game that we bring that one back....seeing that it is organic and all. Maybe we could get Nick Haddad to come and lead an alternate version of the cheer (7/11 Building parking lot style).

Agree! I think having the more compact stadium with fans more evenly distributed between the sides will really enhance this sort of tradition. It will be a good environment for organic traditions to develop.

Bring back Rock and Roll.
U…..A……B
Give em hell
Give em hell
Go big green
That used to be loud at Football and Basketball games pre-shutdown. Now folks act like they don’t care.
Fix the blazer spell out chant. It’s cheesy.
Also, I don’t mind allowing a portion of the band to roam the stadium and play Rock and Roll or Land of 1000 dances, again.
What about the souvenir cups with the fight song and schedule on it? Bring those back.
How about the band actually singing the fight song again?
Leave Mo Bamba or Knuck if you buck instrumental the 4th Qtr intro song. Don’t fix what isn’t broken.

I think the "Blazer Thunder" is stupid as well. They only started doing this after the Viking Clap became so mainstream. Its fine if they do it, but nothing about it is unique to UAB. At least when teams rip off the Tomahawk Chop it makes sense. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets or the Texas State Bobcats aren't doing a Tomohawk Chop. If the Alcorn State Braves did the Tomahawk Chop it would be a rip off but at least it makes sense.

Leave that for the SEC I don't think SEC schools even chant that lately.

If you don't like certain things that are done then just don't do them. I don't do the Blazer Thunder at basketball cause i equate it with football. The football players like it so im good with it.

Screw the old Birmingham song...terrible for a crowd. Why does it have to be Birmingham....it can be a song about Dragons, Fire, Raging against Machine (BOT) or even Boom by P.O.D. (here come the boys from the South....South=Southside)
I assume some Sam Hunt "House Party" at some point in game even though i would hate that
