Golf team opens up 2021-22 season
They're at a tournament being hosted by Louisiana Tech. We have a new Tropical Storm (Nicholas) in the Houston area to be worried about the next few days, but that part of Louisiana might be far enough North to not be an issue (at least Monday - maybe not for Tuesday).

Honestly, golf has been one of the most disappointing men's teams in several years at Rice (even more so than football in some respects just because I can't understand why a school like Rice can't attract top flight golfers). This year's team could be better but I wouldn't get my hopes too high on that possibility. I do think it's interesting we have a Jake Benson and a Blake Benson on the team (unrelated). Our Spaniard isn't playing in this first tournament for some reason - I think he might be our best golfer (but like most of the team, he's so up and down).

Anyway, they're off to a bad start so I don't expect to see too many golf updates on this site.

OK, I'll bite.

In the tourney's first day, the Owls are 18th (+13) of 21 (including the last-place LaTech "B" team). (http://results.golfstat.com/public/leade...&tid=24121)

UH leads at -4. Little Rock, LSU & USM are a stroke behind.

Sophomore Forrest Park has Rice's best first-round score: +1/T41. (http://results.golfstat.com/public/leade...&tid=24121)

Kevin Lee of Lamar had Sunday's lowest round (-5). Sam Murphy (Louisiana Tech) and Drew Doyle (LSU) are a stroke back.

So you’re saying, after one it’s Rice 13, Houston -4?

I need to follow more golf…

Yep! LOL!

(But I'm still not likely to cheer for more Owl bogeys, doubles and snowmen.)

RE: Golf team opens up 2021-22 season
Well by Owl at the Moon's scoring system, we're having a good 2nd round too.

Speaking of Forrest Park, I am trying to figure out if I have ever played golf at a Forest Park Golf Course. I know I've driven past the one in Saint Louis (that's several 9 hole courses just west of downtown Saint Louis - and basically across the street from Wash U). There is also a Forest Park Golf Course in Queens - that's the one I might have played. I know years ago, I played a muni course in Queens when visiting my brother who lived out there at the time. Playing NYC muni courses is quite an experience. Golfers don't really yell Fore on errant shots on those courses - just a lot of other four letter words instead. You can also see some interesting local hazards, just as abandoned cars (and worse).

Another 2 TD but we missed another XP

After two:
Rice 26
UH -1

(UTSA “struggling” at -14)

RE: Golf team opens up 2021-22 season
We actually beat UH today ... with traditional golf scores: +6 (today's team score) to +8!

Ours was the 11th best team score today (out of 21 teams).

The Owls edged ahead of WKU into 17th place (+32), 10 strokes behind #16 High Point.

The Hilltoppers (+14 today) dropped to a stroke behind us (+33/18th place) while Chattanooga (where Rice notable William Masterson was once President) fell out of a tie with us into 19th place (+36 ... +10 today).

LSU won going away with a team total of -23 (-13 today). UTSA was second (-16/-2 today) and USM was third (-13 (-6).

UH ended up T7 with Lamar at +7 (+8 today).
