Write up dives into the Texas schools being aligned and working together - as they probably should

The Texas schools still represent a minority of conference members and so will still need to be respectful of the views and interests of the other members - as they probably should.

If they form an alliance with Tarleton State and UT Rio Grande Valley as well, the Texas 4 will become the Texas 6 and represent nearly half the conference.

I assume they already have, but that still doesn't give them voting control. Even adding a seventh member in Texas to balance the conference won't give them voting control, unless NMSU decides to throw in with them. The reality is that both sides of the conference will have to work together for the common good whether they like it or not.

I've pointed this out before but I'll say it again: the country's fastest-growing states (as measured by the population increase from the 2010 to the 2020 census) are #1 Arizona, #2 Utah and #3 Texas. The WAC is the only D1 conference that spans Arizona, Utah and Texas. It would be dumb for either side of the WAC to work to advance their own interests at the expense of the other, when there's such a huge opportunity to build success together.

The Texas schools don't have the voting power to directly control the direction of the WAC, but they do have enough votes to veto any proposition they don't like. For balance sake, it would probably be best if the WAC were to add a 14th member outside the Texas borders. Weber State being the best option if they're interested. But then again, the Texas Schools would need to agree with that addition if WSU were available.

NMSU ran into the problem in the Sun Belt. The Sun Belt added so many eastern teams before NMSU could be considered a full member that they put a nix on the possibility of NMSU joining the SBC anytime soon. Forcing NMSU football out instead.

While NMSU would like to be in the Sun Belt, I don’t think their fans can disagree that the Sun Belt made good call - they have some sensible travel partners in the Olympic sports and the FCS additions’ football programs have already exceeded the level of success NMSU had in the Sun Belt and their history at the I-A/FBS level in general

And to all of y’all, sorry.

The Texas schools have a strong bloc now. Called it on how scheduling would work which is much to the TX schools benefit.

Curious how other things fall but the notion of the addition being in Southwest Division, the ouster of the Commish/new hire will clearly or have clearly told us what’s up. Oh yeah, don’t forget what Andy Wittry reported about the confusion of sitting league members about the agreement signed by the new schools…

RE: The Hunt for a Replacement: WAC Commissioner Position
I dont know if RGV would go along with the others on many topics. They are the odd man out in that "conference" and have much more in common with, not to mention extensive history with, the WAC. The others would take the RGV vote but then kick them to the curb, and RGV gets that. Other than a vote of support, the others many nothing to do with anything from the Valley.

At this point, we've dug a hole for ourselves accepting these schools, as I expected. The best we can hope for in the next 3-5 years until they leave, is to simply block their efforts at every turn, be it loading up their side of the conference, moving championships like basketball to some some godforsaken place, only accepting new members with football and wanting to move into Louisiana, and them never wanting to play the WAC schools unless absolutely necessary.

They talk about travel costs, but look at their non conference schedules! They travel any where and everywhere they want for all sports. Its US they want nothing to do with. Don't kid yourselves. Unless they leave sooner than later, they will destroy the conference just to try to steal our auto bid.

We need a commish who is on the old WAC members side.

They can sit and spin off as far as I'm concerned, as long they are not successful in stealing our auto bid, kicking us all out or waiting for is to leave, and then recreating the southland bus league of dreams minus Houston Baptist and Northwestern State, or whatever schools they are mad at this week.

No point in arguing anything right now. Nothing has happened yet and we don’t know what’s going to happen. Until we actually hire someone and they’re in office for over a year, then we’ll know how things are flowing.

Good point, but then what would the purpose of this board be? Arguing and speculation is the main purpose. COGS

As a GCU fan, I am hoping the 14th member (if there is one) is either NAU or Weber State. I'd even take a school in Idaho or Oregon to help Seattle have a better traveling partner. Whatever the pick, it should be west of Texas to keep the WAC footprint
from going too far east.

Agree, I’d take NAU, Weber St, or Eastern Washington.

I know you don’t like the Texas schools but I’m 99% sure NMSU is voting with the Texas schools on majority of things. In fact I will go this far, if there was a break away NMSU would align with the Texas schools.

I don't think many weighty issues have come up to be voted on yet. Its only been a few months.

Not sure if I "dont like them" as much as I see they situation at hand -- they joined a league and have done nothing but work to avoid playing or travelling to 7 out 9 schools in the league.

On one hand, it doesn't matter because they won't be around very long. On the other hand, they haven't left their previous conference partners as friends at all. But the damage they can do in the meantime trying to bully everyone else around can hurt the conference long term. And because they have no interest in sticking around, its more like an experiment for them to see how far they can push the rest of the members before they say no to them. And that's when they'll be gone. And bad mouthing the WAC and its members on the way out, like they have done and keep doing to their Southland partners.

Its imperative we get someone accustomed to the West and travel to represent the regular WAC members and to stayed focused on being the Western Athletic Conference, heavily in the inter mountain region as has been tradition, and not getting suckered into being someone else's stepping stone/doormat.

The fear of the Texas 6 schools voting in block may be the reason the WAC also worked to get Southern Utah. If there is ever a majority of schools in one state (i.e., Texas) than several years down the road the balance of power could be lost.

Power and control issues ruined the Big 12. Texas killed the conference long before they killed the conference. Everyone knew then Texas AD DeLoss Dodds was the real B12 Commish and the guy who was the official commish was his lackey.

Most of the departures from the B12 were schools that were tired of Texas (and OU to a lesser extent) dictating policy and direction of the B12 and sought an environment where everyone had a seat at the table.

Texas and OU taking off for the SEC was the end of a long, slow death March that saw first one school then another depart over the years. I don’t wish a similar fate for the WAC. All the more reason for the conference to pursue schools from the Big Sky to dilute the power of a potential Texas block alliance, and I say this as a fan of a Texas school.

The WAC went through this fate when Boise State was king of the conference. They got a lion's share of the TV revenue and held the conference hostage with the threat of leaving. The other conference members succumb to Boise State's monetary demands but it was still not enough to keep them happy. Despite getting the largest slice of the revenue pie in the WAC, Boise State still felt they deserved more and still left the WAC for greener pastures; igniting the eventual mass exodus schools to the MWC and CUSA leaving the WAC with no FBS football. It has taken nearly 10 years for the WAC to reintroduce football back into the conference.

I've been working on this for a week and hope to have a big WAC story, that touches on this, membership, TV and more, later next week.

I'll just say this. That CollegeAD story was not accurate.

What he said - thanks Matt for your contributions to the conversation and interacting with us low-hanging fruit (fans).

Quite the story that people associated around the WAC are putting our bread crumbs that are allegedly misleading to CollegeAD which is rooted in college athletics through their various connection.
